Synthetic man-made diamonds are real and have been for years, as is using radiation to generate energy. The only issue, despite the claims by the university, is that it's all theoretical at best.
While not generating power the same way as explained in Batman and Robin, this concept at least brings the idea of diamond batteries into reality and takes the premise found in the movie from ridiculous to something more plausible.
